Using an Appropriate E-mail Address
Do you know how important it is to have an appropriate e-mail address? It is a huge red flag to colleges and universities, as well as other professionals, what kind of person you are if you have an inappropriate e-mail address. Believe it or not, when colleges and universities are deciding between candidates, they do take into consideration factors like the kind of e-mail address you have chosen to represent yourself. An important reminder is to always represent yourself in a professional and positive manner. This will be a symbol of who you are!
A lot of students these days will create their e-mail addresses based on their interests, nicknames, or other things that they may find funny. This is okay, unless it is inappropriate.
Examples of inappropriate e-mail addresses would include using the following:
1. Swear Words
2. Sexual Words
3. Words having to do with illegal topics or activities
4. Words that would offend race, religion, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or gender.
Keep in mind, a good rule of thumb is to rate it like a movie, keep it PG!

Okay.I Understand tha but then they have to understand tha people are not going to change the way they talk and the way they act just because some one else doesnt like it or thinks its "UNPROFESSIONAL".because to be honest most people dont care.

So basically you're saying that law firms should have E-Mail addresses that would offend people, and everyone should just get over it?
Sure, we can't change how people talk, but there's a difference between being a person who is able to be a bit professional around the workplace, and a person being illiterate in general, I don't think you're going to be at a job interview and say "'Aight G-Unit, dis b cool wit me"
Anyways, very helpful post, thanks!

It is extremely important to act professional in the workplace, especially if you want to interview for a position and get the job. It is a very similar situation when applying for college. If an admissions director receives an email from a prospective student with an inappropriate email address, that is his/her first impression of you! You want to stand out, make yourself come across professional and show this person that getting into college or getting the job means something to you. It is your first impression that people remember and you want to do all you can to make it a positive one!

Ok, so I can clearly see that we all have an agreement on the subject to a certain extent. I agree that people cannot be changed. But all people come with enough common sense to control the way the speak when in the presence of someone who can, and will alter your future. People are uncoharant of how they act these days. Literacy and Education all together. As long as you speak respectful and clearly you should put yourself in a pretty good position in life.
But thats just my opinion. -Kenny ^_^

The article was written as a heads up to notify students that colleges, universities and future employers do take these details into consideration when deciding between two candidates. We are simply trying to aware all students that they should represent themselves the best way possible.

ok i understand that email accounts need to be approiate but, you shouldn't change everything for something because all youre changing is a couple of words, you will still act the same way. SO what im saying is it needs to be "PG" but it needs to still kinda reflect who you are.

Interesting comments. A person typically has many things about them that highlight who they are. When choosing which one to highlight it is always wise to consider who will be viewing it. If it isn't something you would be comfortable saying in front of your grandma or your pastor...then it probably isn't appropriate for a college admission representative or a potential boss either! :) Look deeper and find something else about yourself that you can use that is still staying true to yourself but isn't "quesionable." A nice professional email that includes your name is always a nice thing to have as you look ahead to using your email for more serious purposes!

I think this makes a very good point. Do you really think that people who have inappropriate e-mail addresses are really the type of people you want to work with? Don't get me wrong. I know a few people who express themselves with inappropriate addresses and they're great people. So I don't see why they can't just make a new address to use for professional stuff like college. Thanks for the post. It was very helpful!
