What are you majoring in?
Are you having a tough time deciding on a major? Don’t worry, most high school aged students are indecisive on what they want to major in, it is normal!
If you are one of the many, and are still unsure on what to major in, do a few things. First, you should make a list of all your interests, including which subjects you really enjoy in school. Find out what is important to you and what makes you happy. This might spark some interest in areas you’ve never thought about. Second, do some research on majors; find out the definitions of majors if you are unsure of what they really are. Believe it or not, the more you read about certain majors, the better understanding you will have of them. By knowing these majors’ meanings, it will be a lot easier for you to narrow it down to which ones spark your interest and which ones don’t. Lastly, do a search on the internet to see if there are career websites or personality tests out there that will tell you which careers you may want to look into. Some websites will have free online tests to match your interests with careers.
Tips to take into consideration:
1. Make a list of pros and cons of a particular major you are interested in. This may help you decide if this is the right major for you.
2. Think twice about majoring in something that a friend or a relative recommends. This might be something they like and it really might not interest you. Make sure you like it, follow your heart!
3. Don’t let the only factor in picking a major be based on how much money you will make! Pick a major that interests you and that you could see yourself doing.
4. Find out what the job market will be like when you graduate for your specific major. In other words, is there a high demand or many jobs open for your major?
5. Keep your mind open; don’t be afraid to pick a major. There is always the option down the road to change your major if you are not happy with it. |
