What do you enjoy doing in your free time?    I enjoy doing many things, if I'm not at school I'm usually hanging out with my friend, I love to play basketball or just sit back and read a book. Most of my time is spent doing a lot of homework and participating in organizations.

My summer will be spent participating in the CURE program at Northwestern Medical School. I will have the opportunity to research cancer and find new ways of fighting the illness. I am very involved in anything that I am interested in and I believe that my involvement makes me a well rounded person and student.

Note from Diwante's Upward Bound Academic Advisor:

I am very pleased to recommend Diwante Shuford to be considered for Student of the Month. I have watched this young man develop both academically and personally into a mature individual. Diwante is focused, determined, excited about learning and genuinely a well rounded student. He excels in all of his classes and he has actively participated in Upward Bound for three years, National Honor Society, Mathlethes, S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere) and Mayor Shaw’s Youth Leadership Academy, just to name a few of his activities.

Diwante is an outstanding student that sets goals for himself and does everything that is needed in order to achieve them. He seeks different opportunities that will advance him as a student and mature him as an individual. As a participant in Upward Bound he continuously looks for ways to help other students and be of service to those in his community and an example to younger students in the program.

In addition to Diwante’s academic achievements, he also goes above and beyond to work within his community. He provides tutoring to some of our students who may need additional help in Math or other areas and he has volunteered to feed the needy and prepare bags for the homeless for the past three years. He has also participated in the annual Hustle up the Hancock event, which raises money for lung disease research, advocacy and education. He volunteers at a local nursing home, he works with younger students in his community and he consistently presents different learning opportunities to high school students in his community.

Diwante is persistent and a hard worker, one who is capable of succeeding in any capacity. He is an amazing student and an example to others. I wholeheartedly recommend him and wish him the very best in all future endeavors.
