Upward Bound Program at Jefferson Davis Community College
What factors are most important to you in deciding on a college?

Academic accreditation and course of study.
Have you thought of a college you would like to attend yet? If so, where?

Yes.  Alabama A & M University.
Have you decided on a major?  If so, what?

Yes.  Mechanical Engineering.
Why are you interested in this major?

I am a "hands on" learner.  I have a love for math and for trying to figure out solutions.  I love working with and on computers.  I also enjoy drawing and creating designs with my wild imagination.  I also like taking things apart such as computers, model cars, bicycles etc. and trying to make them work again.  I am not always successful at putting everything back together again, but I enjoy making the attempt because it challenges my mind.  Therefore, I feel engineering is a great career choice for me.

Favorite Subject(s):

 Mathematics.

Favorite Book:

The Pursuit of Happiness.

Favorite Quote:

I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. Phillippians 4:13.

Favorite Food:

Cheeseburgers

Favorite Artist/Musical Group:

Ne-Yo (Producer/ R&B Singer)

Favorite Movie:

Stomp The Yard

Favorite TV Show:

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Do you have any pets, if so, what?

I have two pit bulldogs, one named Gator and the other one's name is Lady.

Do you have a job, if so what?

Yes, David's Catfish House and Atmore Area YMCA.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Spending time with my family and friends, playing basketball, and talking on the phone.

Is there anything else you want to share?

I am a student from a rural area and middle class loving, supportive family.  In my community, opportunities are scarce but not impossible if you apply yourself.  I am thankful for the Jefferson Davis TRIO Upward Bound program and staff for helping me prepare for my college adventures and having faith that I will succeed in whatever career path I choose for my life.  Accomplishing my academic endeavors are my priorities.  I know in order to accomplish my goals it requires hardwork, dedication and the ability to stay focused on my dreams.  I believe that education is the key to success and the greatest success comes from achieving above and beyond ordinary expectations.  My short term goal is to obtain my bachelors and masters degree in engineering.  My long term personal goal is to establish myself as an authority in my field in order to become an entrepreneur.  I also want to be able to give back to my community by becoming a designer, owner and operator of a recreation center for under privileged children whose parents cannot afford membership and participation fees.  Growing up I spent most of my childhood at the YMCA while my mother worked.  This program provided me with a positive daily environment.  There are so many young kids in my community that have turned to gang and drug activities due to lack of supervision.  I want to be able to provide services to enhance our youth because they are our future leaders.  I hope to be able to provide childcare services, tutoring, sports and recreations and a  mentoring program.  After completing my day as a full time engineer, I will spend my spare time making a difference in the lives of children.  It is then, that I will be rewarded for all of my hard work and efforts during my high school and college years of studies and perseverance, knowing that I have paved the way for my siblings and other children to become successful and productive citizens.

A Statement from James' Program Director:

James Webster is one of the brightest students in the Jefferson Davis Community College Upward Bound Program.  He has ranked number one in his graduating class maintaining a 4.0 grade point average since his freshman year of high school.  He is a hard working, attentive and very respectful young man.  He eagerly participates in class discussions and always lends a helping hand to other students.  James knows the value of an education.  He is striving to become a first-generation college graduate with hopes of becoming an engineer.  He has a wonderful family that supports his dreams and does whatever they can to help him succeed.  With his positive attitude and diligent work ethic, James Webster is destined to become a successful young man.

Congratulations James!

It is absolutely great to see a young man like you believe in the goals and dreams that you have set! I hope that other students can look at your ePAQ and your story and become motivated like you to make a difference in the world. You have truly worked hard to get where you are. Everyone can see that by all of your awards/achievements and groups/activities that you have on your ePAQ. There is not a doubt in my mind that you will go very far in life. It was a pleasure to write this article about you! Good luck in the bright future that lies ahead of you! :)

Jam, congratulations on this nomination and all that you have accomplished so far. You still have a little ways to go, so you ain't grown yet. Keep God first, continue to good work, and be the best in all you you do. You never know who's watching; you are someone's role model right now and being positive and striving for what you want is letting that individual know whatever you want, it can be obtained! May God continue to guide, strengthen, and Bless you!

Aunt Shirley
